Therapists for college students near New York University
Sharon Jung
Hey, glad you're here! Being a student is not just about education, is it? We've got lives outside of school, and all those moving parts can get us feeling overwhelmed, going a million miles per hour all the time, burnt out, lost, unmotivated, or even just numb. I work best with clients who are open to feedback, stay consistent in their care, and stay curious to explore different perspectives of their narrative. AKA, all I ask is that you show up to this space that I will prepare for you in which you can be totally you. Without the filters, photoshop, and all the overthinking of what the "right" thing to say is. You don't have to hold onto everything you're going through alone. Let's speak it out and game plan together on a weekly basis. If you feel like you don't even have the language to describe your experience, that's okay! We can build from the ground up. Maybe it'll help to think of it like this: I'm offering therapy like a key to a secret room that no one else has access to but you and I. You can learn and master skills in our therapeutic space, and it won't impact the real world at all because what happens and is heard in here, stays in here. That could look like role-playing a confrontational discussion you might've been avoiding with your roommate or just even saying an insecurity out loud for the first time and reality-checking it. It also just might be practicing how to say 'No' to different people in your life and finally setting boundaries that actually serve you. Then, when you're ready, you take those skills into the real world, and we watch your life change, perhaps slowly, but surely. Therapist shopping can definitely be overwhelming, so I invite you to get to know me through a 10-minute consultation through Zoom. I'll answer any questions, we'll be able to put a face and voice to the name, and you can feel out the overall vibe!
Manhattan Alternative Wellness Collective
We offer affirming psychotherapy and sex therapy for individuals, couples, multiple-partner relationships, and poly and leather families. We are experts in alternative sexualities, specializing in working with adults in the kink/BDSM, polyamorous/non-monogamous, trans/gender-nonconforming/non-binary, LGBQIA+, and sex work communities. We work with those who live openly and out; and those who have more conservative and private lifestyles. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including holistic, person-centered, collaborative, empowerment-focused, trauma-informed, IFS, DBT, and EMDR. We welcome people of every ability, age, gender, national origin, race/ethnicity, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation, and we cultivate space for conversations that de/reconstruct whiteness, and cultivate positive racial and intersectional identities. People seek therapy for many reasons, including: a deeper understanding of identity or sexuality; difficulty adjusting to relationship difficulties or traumatic experiences; anxiety and/or depression; sexual functioning issues; compulsive thoughts or behavior; and/or changes in relationship structure or power dynamic. Most people decide to work with my practice because of my specialized training and experience, or because they feel more comfortable speaking to a therapist with first-hand knowledge of alternative identities and lifestyles.

You may want something different from your life, but you’re not sure what it is or how to go about getting it. You could have questions about relationships, career, or identity. Or perhaps you have been finding yourself overtaken by strong emotions at unexpected times. You need a space to talk, think, feel, and explore your world - both the parts that are acknowledged and also the parts that feel mysterious or shrouded. I see psychotherapy as a process of discovery. Through this process, you will have the opportunity to learn about yourself, including the parts of you that are hard to reach or difficult to know. I believe that a person cannot be fully defined in terms of a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. We are complex beings with unique temperaments and lived experiences, and we exist in a world of complex and sometimes oppressive systems. I see you first and foremost as an individual and acknowledge the courage and vulnerability it takes to seek out therapy. I practice psychodynamic therapy through an anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ affirming lens. This work can allow you to have greater self-knowledge; to grow, and to consider and perhaps to make different decisions in your life. My approach is to bring curiosity, empathy, and insight to your current situation and to go from there.

Kelly Scott- Tribeca Therapy
TriBeCa Therapy is a center for psychotherapy that was founded on the assumption that human beings are original, imaginative, inspired, and inventive. We particularly love our work with young adults and college students and are connected to issues they deal with. Issues related to sex and dating, drugs and drinking, depression and anxiety and academic pressures aren’t topics that will freak us out. We can handle it. College students frequently discuss with us challenges such as: making friends in ways that don’t involve alcohol, making friends as a person of color, navigating social situations that demand connecting with strangers (like in the cafeteria) and finding “their people.” We work to create a partnership that takes these challenges on together, trying new strategies, taking increasingly bigger risks and dealing with the disappointments and celebrating the successes that follow. College is a time when many young adults are dealing with very adults issues like sex, sexual assault, eating disorders, substance abuse, managing money, race, class, and career choices. Creating a space where young adults feel comfortable talking about these issues is a strength of our therapists and a non-judgmental stance is key. The object isn’t to insist on a particular set of values or practices, but to support young people to understand what they are dealing with and to make active choices about who they want to be. As a first or second generation BIPOC person, do you feel like you are stuck between family expectations, your own dreams, and your own needs? As someone who may be defined as “other” are you having to constantly code switch or suppress who you really are to move between different contexts? Do you feel like you are constantly over giving to the point of not having time or resources to yourself? All of this can easily make you feel depressed, anxious, drained in your relationships, and unfulfilled. My clients come to me in the states that I just described and after working with me report living a life that reflects their values on all levels, a more empowered ability to take up space in the world as a BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ person, and ability to ask for and receive more in their relationships. I take the time to get to know my clients and work in a way that empowers them to identify and dissolve old narratives that are keeping them stuck in unsatisfying relationships or situations through an approach that is both conversational and dives deep. If you resonate, I would love to hear from you for a free initial consultation call.

College can be both exciting and overwhelming, a time of exploration, pressure, and major life transitions. I work with students who are learning how to balance it all: academics, relationships, identity, and the uncertainty of what comes next. Whether you’re feeling anxious, stuck, homesick, or unsure about your path, therapy can be a space to slow down, get curious, and reconnect with yourself. I’m currently pursuing my M.A. in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at NYU and earned my B.S. from Emerson College. My approach is person-centered and collaborative, guided by your unique strengths, values, and goals. I often draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps us move through self-doubt, perfectionism, or comparison, and focus on what really matters to you. I especially enjoy working with women, those navigating relationship challenges, stress, or women’s health concerns. My goal is to create a safe, judgment-free space where you can learn to manage difficult emotions, build resilience, and feel more grounded in who you are, both on campus and beyond. Sessions are available in person or virtually. Feel free to reach out by email or phone with any questions or to schedule a free consultation. I have flexible availability.

As a licensed social worker/psychotherapist my aim is to create a safe space for you to talk and organize your thoughts. My style is supportive and non-judgmental. I work with adolescents and adults of all ages. As every case is unique, I practice one-on-one psychotherapy informed by an array of modalities. I am highly attuned to the needs of the individual person and encourage gentle exploration of one's current behaviors and how they may be influenced by one's past. In addition to psychotherapy, I practice psychoanalysis, which can afford a deeper exploration.

Missy Fogarty
I help people feel better and improve their lives with music psychotherapy. If you are suffering from anxiety, depression, addiction or everyday stress with relationships, work or family. If you want a fluid and creative approach to therapy that helps you go deep to the core of your issues, I can help. I am particularly passionate about working with those who identify as LGBTQIA+, especially trans and GNC folx. In a world full of stigma, with so much pressure to conform to a heteronormative society, being trans or GNC can be an isolating and scary experience. I can help you on your journey to become your true self.
